Microsoft has released an updated copy of their whitepaper (Published 8/5/2011) which provides an overview of the Visual Studio 2010 product line, including MSDN subscriptions, and the licensing requirements for those products in common deployment scenarios.
It is available in DOC, PDF and XPS formats.
Here are the list of changes for August 2011:
- Addition of option to use SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition with Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010.
- Launch of Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011
Here are the list of changes for March 2011:
- Introduction of unlimited load testing for Visual Studio Ultimate for MSDN subscribers.
- Introduction of Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 and Project Server Integration Feature Pack.
- Introduction of full Visual Studio product line via the Enrollment for Education Solutions in the Campus Agreement program in Microsoft Volume Licensing.
- Addition of Windows on the Developer Desktop section.
- Addition of Software Activation section.
- Clarifications in General Licensing Guidance for Team Foundation Server 2010 section.
- Clarifications on Team Foundation Server CALs requirements, including the CAL Exception for Certain Work Items.
- Clarification that a Project Server CAL is included with production use of Project Professional 2010.
- Clarification on software use rights for MSDN subscriptions provided via the Microsoft Partner Network.
- Minor clarification in Distribution of MSDN Software as Part of an Installation Image.
- Minor clarification in Assigning MSDN Subscriptions to External Contractors example.

Azure DevOps and Visual Studio Awesomeness 
MSDN licenses are actually useless. As per terms and conditions, they allow to install softwares but they can only be used for design, development and testing purpose. But that pc can not be used for sending emails, playing games or editing document.
If one wants to send email (personal or business) needs to purchase base operating system and ms office separately. Else liable for penalty.

That is not entirely correct, some MSDN subscriptions with VS 2010 contain production licenses, such as:
Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate with MSDN
Team Foundation Server 2010 with 1 CAL
Expression Studio 3
Office Professional Plus 2010, Visio Premium 2010, Project Professional 2010

I agree with Jiten. Though it can be used for development and testing, it cannot be used for sending mail, editing docs, playing games or any such use so called production.
Further it is so unreasonable –
(1) Systems engineer or system administrator only installs MSDN WILL NOT not involve in any kind of development or testing. you know??????? MS wants you to buy a license to him as he uses it to iNSTALL!!!!
(2) MSDN user cannot be switched more than once in a period of 90 days. It means, you have an engineer working on MSDN for a month and leaves the team; you have to keep this license of MSDN idle for next 60 days…….
(3) macdonald must be ms sales guy. he has not given the cost of ultimate edition for you to use some components like office, visio, project …. for production. ULTIMATE edition costs roughly $12,000, ie.SIX LAKH RUPEES. Cost of MSDN prof is just $1,000 or Rs. 50,000/- If you need to the same user to use it for production it would be wise to buy an OS (Rs, 7000) + MSDN pro (Rs, 50,000) + Office (Rs. 20,000) + Visio Pro (Rs. 45,000) + Project Pro (20,000). All put together Rs. 1,42,000/- well under $2,000. Well prices mentioned above are approximation. This is what I learnt out of a little bit of research of net and after consulting a couple of Microsoft certified gold partners.
